Vaasa launches world-first shared charging network for e-scooter operators

The Finnish city of Vaasa has introduced a network of charging racks for shared e-scooters, combining designated parking with automatic charging as part of efforts to improve fleet operations and keep public spaces organised. The initiative has been delivered through a partnership between micromobility operators Ryde and Dott, and charging infrastructure provider StandAB, making Vaasa the first city in the world where multiple shared micromobility operators use the same charging infrastructure.

The entire scooter fleet in Vaasa has been equipped with charging adapters, allowing vehicles to begin charging automatically when parked in one of the new racks. According to the company, the system reduces the need for manual battery swaps while encouraging riders to park scooters in designated locations.

The charging racks are also designed to simplify the end of a journey. When a scooter is parked in a rack, the rental ends automatically without requiring riders to manually finish the trip in the app. There are also plans to remove the requirement for users to submit an end-of-ride photo when parking at the charging racks, with both features intended to make the parking process more straightforward.

By combining charging with designated parking, the company aims to improve operational efficiency while creating a more seamless experience for riders and helping cities better manage shared micromobility in busy urban environments.
